Stratification is defined as a division of groups based on property, power, and prestige. Although it is not entirely evident, American society is built upon stratification. Many individuals believe that America is a place of equality; however, in reality it is divided between the bourgeoisie and the proletariats. In order to maintain stratification, the elite of American society use their obtained power. Those who have power have wealth, and those with wealth have an influence on people. Take for example that Congress wants to create a new highway. There are two businesses, one that is able to create highways for less money, and one that is owned by a nephew of a Congress member.
