1. Does George do the right thing at the end of the book? Explain why his actions are moral or immoral.
George did the right thing at the end of the book because Lennie was a threat to everyone around him and if George did not kill him sooner, he would have killed more people later on. With Lennie’s strength and size, he overpowered anybody that he faced and because of the mental state that he was in, he could not control his power remarkably well and that led to many tragic outcomes. For example, “And then she was still, for Lennie had broken her neck,” (91). Since Lennie cannot control his power, it causes him to do things that he never intended of doing. What was only supposed to be the stroking of Curley’s wife’s hair, lead to her death only a few moments later. George took Lennie’s life to save the lives of many others.
2. If Steinbeck could see American society today, what do you think he would say has improved? What themes or issues from his novella would still be present (power, loneliness, American Dream, discrimination, etc.)?
Looking at the American society today, Steinbeck would say that discrimination has improved. Discrimination against African Americans back then was way worse than it is today. For instance, ““’Cause I’m black. They play cards in there, …show more content…
It gives one another the strength to preserve and fight through challenges. For example, “Lennie broke in. “But not us! An’ why? Because… because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that’s why.” He laughed delightedly,” (14). George and Lennie always have someone to talk to whenever they feel lonely or need someone to talk to. They motivate each other to keep going. As a result, they have a future in front of them. Lonely guys like Crooks have a bitterness that grows overtime. They have no strength or motivation to keep them going and they have no future planned ahead for
