My mother raised me and my eight siblings. My mother did everything she could to provide for us as a single parent. My parents split two years after we came to America in 2001. All of my siblings, including myself, went to school giving my mother time to work while we were away. I don’t remember much of the places my mother had worked, but I do remember she was a lead cook at a Somali restaurant in Minneapolis. My mother didn’t make much working there and she struggled to pay rent on her own every month.
Luckily, there is programs like section 8, where she was given a rental subsidy and didn’t have to worry about the rent. Of course, with almost every program if not all, there are restrictions and requirements. With section 8, …show more content…

Since I come from a Muslim background, every Saturday and Sunday my siblings and I, took a course on memorizing the holy book—Quran. We went to a mosque to take the course, and we were able to interact with our peers there, which made learning enjoyable. My mother values education, and she did not want us to stay home on the weekends.
My mother made sure she used every penny that she worked for, to invest in getting me and my siblings educated. Aside from attending school and the weekend Islamic course, after school, once a week we went to a tutoring center to get help with our homework. Since, my mother did not know how to read or write in English. At the time she could only afford to take us once a week, but she made sure she had my older siblings tutor me and my younger siblings on our homework. I admire the drive my mother had to give me and my siblings the best education she was able to afford.
