My mother raised me and my eight siblings. My mother did everything she could to provide for us as a single parent. My parents split two years after we came to America in 2001. All of my siblings, including myself, went to school giving my mother time to work while we were away. I don’t remember much of the places my mother had worked, but I do remember she was a lead cook at a Somali restaurant in Minneapolis. My mother didn’t make much working there and she struggled to pay rent on her own every month.
Luckily, there is programs like section 8, where she was given a rental subsidy and didn’t have to worry about the rent. Of course, with almost every program if not all, there are restrictions and requirements. With section 8,

For cultural and religious purposes, my mother put the girls in the same room and the boys in another. I shared a room with my two younger sisters while my oldest sister had her own room. In another room, my younger brother and older brother shared a room while the oldest (my brother) had his own room, leaving one room left for my mother. As a child, I wanted to have my own room, but I had to get used to sharing a room with my sisters. For the most part, our house was a full house, my siblings and I were all close in age, therefore, we fought over the same things and had to share everything. However, sharing made us …show more content…
Since I come from a Muslim background, every Saturday and Sunday my siblings and I, took a course on memorizing the holy book—Quran. We went to a mosque to take the course, and we were able to interact with our peers there, which made learning enjoyable. My mother values education, and she did not want us to stay home on the weekends.
My mother made sure she used every penny that she worked for, to invest in getting me and my siblings educated. Aside from attending school and the weekend Islamic course, after school, once a week we went to a tutoring center to get help with our homework. Since, my mother did not know how to read or write in English. At the time she could only afford to take us once a week, but she made sure she had my older siblings tutor me and my younger siblings on our homework. I admire the drive my mother had to give me and my siblings the best education she was able to afford.

My mother was a single parent for the vast majority of my childhood as my father was in and out of our lives due to circumstances I do not wish to disclose. I remember days when I would get off of school and then go out, not returning home till after the streetlights came on and my mother never seemed to care. Also, much like Harold McAllister, my uncles and cousins would often be around. My two siblings and I were not afforded very many after school activities, not because they weren’t allowed but because as a single parent my mother just couldn’t afford it.…

Through my youth, my parents worked relentlessly to provide my brothers and myself with a good Jewish education in a private institution. It came to a point where my dad had to travel out of state for business, a few weeks at a time, leaving my mom to run the household all by herself. I could see the effect all of the stress put on her, so I did what any other good, thoughtful son would do- I helped out. I committed myself to completing nightly chores around the house, such as doing laundry or cleaning dishes,…

She instilled in me the value of education and she sacrificed her time and comfort to ensure that I acquired the best education. During this period, my country provided its citizens with a low standard government-sponsored high school education. While other low-income parents jumped at this opportunity, my mom refused to allow her children become victims of an unfair socioeconomic system where the elite were able to attain the best quality of education. Despite the financial hardships, my mom took out loans from her place of work to pay the high-priced tuition of private high school where I would obtain the best education. After working for nine hours and preparing dinner for her family, my mother created time to assist me with homework and studying.…

At an early age, I didn’t understand the concept of an immigrant family and that our resources were very limited. It wasn’t until I got older, that I finally understood and recognized the struggle that my family went and still continues to go through. My realization began when I was about 11-years old and I noticed that my father not only worked for his own small gardening service, but that he also took my older brothers to work with him. I knew it was a time for serious measures because my brothers started helping my father when they were close to my age, and they continued throughout their whole school years. Everything was going normal in my family then, we rented a house that was in the name of my aunt, had enough money for the bills,…

Although I grew up with an American influence in my household, my family and Vietnamese culture has encouraged me to attain greater aspirations for myself and to become a better influence for a younger generation. Growing up with a very predominant Vietnamese influence within my household impacted every aspect of my daily life, from how I was raised as a child to how I see the world currently. Many things played a role in shaping me, for example my family and culture. I was raised by a single mom giving me a different outlook. My mom taught me that no matter what happens in the course of life, I have to be able to count on myself; she raised me to be independent and to stand on my own two feet.…

Our textbook defines territoriality as a “strong attachment to or defensive control of a place or an area.” To me, this can be very easily related to college, especially when it is related in particular to living in a dorm, apartment or house with at least a couple of other people. Growing up, I lived in a three-bedroom home; I had one brother and one sister. Naturally, until my sister moved out when I was 13, my brother and I shared a room – thus sharing almost everything. Back up a year, heading into seventh grade I transferred to a private boarding school that was about two-and-a-half hours away from home.…

The study of macroeconomics is an academic discipline that examines the performance, structure, behavior, and decision-making of an economy as a whole, rather than individual markets. Society as we know it is an ever changing array of tendencies and activities that can be classified into a series of numerical results. There are several different macroeconomic scenarios that the individual consumer is presented; this paper will discuss a few of these. First, the simple act of obtaining household items such as groceries can have many fundamental economic concepts. Secondly, in today’s business environment, where corporate reorganization causes massive layoffs, a ripple effect can be felt throughout the economy.…

As a child, having rules to follow wasn’t unheard of with my family. There was always a way to behavior with friends/family, at school, at home and out in the street. Often I found myself getting into trouble because I didn 't listen and also the fact that I always found some kind of way to slipping out of having to doing something that I knew I was supposed to do. But out of all the people in my family my mom was the strictest. When expectations set high, not meaning them meant my siblings and I typical had a week long cleaning punishments along with handing over all toys, games, and light up sneakers; about three times a week this happened to me.…
