Using this idea, each person should still be putting in the same amount of time and effort as if they were doing a project on their own. However, this is not always the case. This is where social loafing comes in. Social loafing is the idea that a person will exert less effort when working in a group then they would if they were working alone. I have worked in many different groups, for school, work, and extracurricular activities, and I have experienced social loafing in all of these situations.
I think my best example of an experience with social loafing happened in my marketing class during my junior year of college. In this class, we had breakout sessions where we were broken into groups of four students. Our semester project required us to do identify a

I currently work at a math tutoring center in College Station for students from first grade through high school. Instructors sit at a one table while they are there, working with up to five students at time. Our policy is to have all of the tables cleaned at the end of the day. To take the burden of cleaning all tables while closing, it is the responsibility of each instructor to clean his or her table before clocking out. We have had some problems with some instructors not keeping up with all procedures, but we have mostly just brushed these off as they are new instructors and are still learning the system. However, there was one instructor who repeatedly did not clean his table before leaving. I think his thought that since he was not closing, he did not have to worry about cleaning his area, and that someone else would do it later for him. Although not cleaning a table is not a major deal, he still was not pulling his weight in cleaning

This keeps social loafing out of the question due to many individuals striving to complete the task at hand and keeping each other motivated. Origami frog was an example of a conjunctive task, in most tasks there is going to be one part that is more difficult than all the rest, if these projects are assigned then the member who gets the hardest part is considered to be the weakest link because they are holding the group back from completing the task as a whole. It is not their fault that their part of the task is more difficult, this is just how a conjunctive task is, however…

In “Rise of the New Groupthink,” Susan Cain discusses the issues with the new trend in which people are being forced to think as a whole instead of a solitary unit. Cain states that certain groups of people tend to function better working alone then they an introvert is forced into group thinking it can cause a decrease in their creative abilities, and hold back their intellectual abilities. One of her main examples was the development of Apple. Jobs ended up convincing Wozniak to give up his own creation and ideas in order to work together and create something new together. Cain argues that there are various downfalls with the idea of groupthink, but she states, “Some teamwork is fine and offers a fun, stimulating, useful way to exchange…

In high school, we were constantly being told that we could not work in groups because we would get too loud. In university group work was encouraged so that our professors wouldn't have to do as much marking. During my observations at my CSL there was a lot of group work. Comparing when the students were working on group work to their individual work, the results were polar opposites. The tasks for students was to write down what they knew about 5 sided figures.…

Socially group work is often praised. With phrases like “two heads are better than one”, team work seems like the most logical choice for a project. This has not been my experience at Florida State University. When faced with the prospect of another involuntary group project I imagined many possibilities and outcomes. None of which reflect my actual experience with the research I conducted, the way the information was formatted, or my experience with Group 3.…

It is very effective in keep students on a schedule and with keep accidents to a minimum. A recommendation would be to separate some students who feed negatively off of one another so that they are not in the same group or sitting near one another. This could be used to minimize chatty students and to minimize negative behaviros between particular students. Another recommendation would be to prepare the room for a student who might be too investigative for his own good. For instance, a student who likes to chew or eat anything should not have regular access to board books.…

Whether you are a part of a social group or on a group project for school or work everyone has the want and need to be included, when group members don’t feel like they have fully been accepted in to the group they can become withdrawn and anti-social which would lead them to not be a contributing part of the team. Having a diverse group of people on a team can help a team more effectively and efficiently reach their common goal. If everyone on the team had the exact same life experiences, was the same age and the same culture they more than likely would have the same general way to approach the group’s common goal. Having diversity on the team can help generate more ideas because everyone’s life experiences and cultural differences have helped form the way they think and the way that they solve problems. Roles, needs and diversity affect a group’s teamwork immensely because if members aren’t performing their specific goal and only focusing on a self-centered role the groups work will either multiply for the other members of the group or the group’s common goal might not be met.…

As can be inferred from the above mentioned literature, social loafing negatively affects group members’ outcomes. Moreover, another negative factor of social loafing is decreasing group performance. According to Hassan (2010), a reasonable consequence of social loafing includes dissatisfaction with group members who are unable to contribute equally and the creation of “in groups and out groups”. In addition, groups will lack the talents that could be provided by those who choose to not…
