Freedom of Speech to say what you want in Oceania.
Freedom of speech is one of the most important amendments to the constitution. It allows you to say what you want and not speak when you want to. In the book 1984 it shows how only certain people in the community can say what they want without getting in trouble with Big Brother. People like Winston, who are part of the lower social class, are not allowed to think or say what they want. Big Brother has the dictatorship to say and think what he wants. Although totalitarian regimes as seen in Orwell’s 1984 are impenetrable, if one amendment of the United States Constitution’s Bill of Rights could be introduced into Oceania, the most liberating addition would be the First Amendment Freedom of Speech because it would limit governmental control, allow for freedom of travel, and would allow for freedom to speak against the government. …show more content…
Some key aspects related to speech are doublethinking and contradictory slogans. The party has slogans like, “War is peace” and “ Freedom is slavery”. If all social classes in parties had the same freedom of speech, it would help people think and say what they want. They use these slogans to manipulate people's minds. The slogans they have are inscribed on the Ministry of Truth pyramid. If you take away the slogans and you let the social classes say what they want, the people have a chance at a better lifestyle. In the book it stated,” Then the face of Big Brother faded away again, and instead the three slogans of the party stood out in bold capitals: WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH,” (Orwell 104).
