Situational irony is the main reason why stories have shocking plot twists. The two stories to have situational irony are “The Sniper” and “The Necklace”. The first example to contain situational irony is “The Sniper”. The story is first built up and then there is a huge twist at the end that changes everything. In “The Sniper”, we find out that the enemy sniper on the other side of the street turns out to be his brother. We find out when the protagonist decides to go check on the dead body and it happens to turn out to be his brother. As stated in the final sentence, “Then the sniper turned over the dead body and looked into his brother’s face” (pg. 4). This fits in situational irony because we never expected for the antagonist that really wants to kill the sniper happens to also be his brother. The second story that contains situational irony is “The Necklace”. The story becomes focused on Loisel trying to repay the necklace that we forget that it is fake. We find out after she sees her friend 10 years later. Loisel is harshly hit with the truth after ten years of working hard to pay their debts because of a necklace. She finds out when she sees her friend and decides to confess, when she does, she is told “Oh. my poor, poor Mathilde! Mine was false, It was worth five hundred francs at the most!” (pg. 301). It fits in because it can be purposefully be used as a comedic plot twist, many never were able to see an ending like that to happen.
