Shame is a feeling of humiliation caused by the realization of wrong or foolish behavior. Jane Bolton, a certified psychoanalyst at the Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis states that, "Shame is the most disturbing experience individuals ever have about themselves; no other emotion feels more deeply disturbing because in the moment of shame the self feels wounded from within.” Shame is a theme that is present in A Thousand Splendid Suns, a novel based out of Afghanistan, written by Khaled Hosseini. In A Thousand Splendid Suns, Jalil is a wealthy businessman out of Herat. Rasheed is a shoemaker who is married to Mariam. Mariam is a 15-year-old female protagonist who is the daughter of Jalil. With money come women. Jalil had many wives as well as many servants. Jalil decided to get with one of those servants and ended up getting her pregnant. This woman is Nana, Mariam’s mother.

Instead, behind closed doors, a face-saving deal had quickly been struck.
