According to American Literature, a hero can be defined as someone who is selfless, and courageous. In One who flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest selflessness is shown by McMurphy when he stands up for the other men in the ward.Courageousness is shown in the story The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn because Huck had helped a runaway slave to freedom. These examples are seen throughout the stories read this semester. Selflessness; you think less about yourself, and more about others. One of the first examples of selflessness and courage takes place in the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo 's Nest written by Ken Kesey. There is a lot of courage shown throughout the novels we read this semester. A big example of courage is from the speech, Civil Disobedience, “Shall we transgress them at once?”(Thoreau). This is about unjust laws, and how people should not just follow them because they are scared of the government. Having courage and not following laws that are unjust, not based on what is morally right and fair, is important because the government thinks that because they make the laws everyone must follow them which is not always true, if the laws are unfair. In The Great Gatsby, Gatsby showed a mediocre amount of courage throughout most of the novel. He looked out after Daisy. When they were driving home they had hit a woman in the street, and Gatsby wanted to make sure that she was okay, “She’ll be alright tomorrow… I’m just going to wait here and see if he tries to bother her about the unpleasantness this afternoon. She’s locked herself into her room, and if he tries any brutality she’s going to turn the light out and on again”(Fitzgerald). Gatsby had stayed at her house after the accident to make sure she was safe. This is courageous because he had gotten into a fight with her husband earlier in the afternoon. Gatsby had bought a house next to her when he moved to West Egg, “Gatsby bought that house so Daisy would be just across the bay.”(Fitzgerald). This is courageous because Daisy had thought that Gatsby was dead so by doing this he showed her that he wasn’t and that he was still in love with her. Gatsby had wanted to make her happy and would do anything for her. Huck Finn was also courageous in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, When he was trying to help Jim escape. While they were running Tom had gotten shot and Tom, Jim, and Huck were being chased by dogs. When they finally reached the raft, Jim was a free man, “Now, old Jim, you’re a freeman again, and I bet you won’t ever be a slave no more!”(Twain). This is
