It is defined as the legal or social practice of separating people on the basis of their race or ethnicity (350). This is seen highly through high schools all over the United States. I’ve seen cafeterias split in sections of people by race. People in society tend to find people who are more like them and the first thing that most look to is race. When moving to a new place people tend to find people they are more comfortable with and the groups stick. In this society segregation is not always forced but mostly by choice. People are not forced to be around others in their race, but we choose to. Some of it deals with how we were raised and what parents want for us and it’s also based of who we are comfortable with and the people we grew up around. Segregation is not always justified by race, but by actions and how we live. The environment in which we group in affects our actions and our peers. Growing up in the ghetto, surrounded by poor wealth and violence, affects the people differently than people growing up in the suburbs (352).
