In Santiago, the central character of The Old Man and the Sea, Ernest Hemingway had created “Code Hero” who personified courage. Hemingway showed courage in his main character when Santiago thought, ”I must hold his pain where it is, he thought. Mine does not matter. I can control mine. But his pain could drive him mad.”(48). By not being forced on his pain but took into account the pain that the fish was going through. He coward from the pain but instead analyzed how the fish was doing. This was a Santiago knew his strengths and weakness but was determined to show what he was capable of doing.
