In life there are many sacrifices one must make in order to create a beneficial outcome in the end. There are many types of sacrifice in Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery, Edgar Allan Poe’s
The Cask of Amontillado, and John Updike’s Pigeon Feathers. In The Lottery, the society sacrifices one person for the greater good. In The Cask of Amontillado Montresor destroys many wine bottles to lure Fortunato into the catacombs to kill him. In Pigeon Feathers, a boy sacrifices the life of birds to realize the reality of God. In these short stories there are multiple examples of many types of necessary sacrifice. In most cases it is something important, sometimes even one's own life. In
The Lottery Tessie Hutchinson protests her life being sacrificed by saying “it isn't fair” (Jackson
4). The sacrifice of human life is one of the most important physical sacrifices that can be made, but Tessie needs to die to show that their city is not like other villages and that it follows its own customs no matter how extreme. She eventually accepts this reality when she stops speaking and does not struggle during the stoning. Many times physical sacrifice is not as important as the sacrifice of life. Instead the sacrifice is usually of valued belongings that one owns. In The Cask of Amontillado “[Montresor] broke and reached [Fortunato] a flagon of De Grave. [Fortunato] emptied it in a breath” showing his willingness to sacrifice physical things for much more important things (Poe 4). Montresor uses the very expensive wine bottles as a distraction for his plot to kill Fortunato slowly, but he must first sacrifice lots of money. Montresor did not hesitate to sacrifice an expensive bottle of wine for his greater plan for Fortunato. Emotional sacrifice is not as noticeable as physical sacrifice, but can leave more
