In Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor, sacrifice is important to the Logan family, even if the ultimate goal is difficult to achieve. The Logans sacrifice their personal safety and the ownership of their land in several instances in order to fight for what their beliefs. Stacey, putting a comforting arm around both Christopher-John and Little Man said to them, “‘ Just' you wait and see. He'll be just' fine come morning’" (216). Papa got shot in the head and his leg broke because he was trying to boycott against racism. This shows how Papa will fight racism no matter how difficult the circumstances might be. Papa is reassuring Big Ma (his Mother) that everything will be fine. This demonstrates how Papa is a loving and supportive son. Papa and Mama cannot work, meaning the Logans cannot earn money. Also, the Logans have a large mortgage on the land. As a result, the Logans owe a lot of money, and have no way of getting it back for now. Fortunately, Uncle Hammer has lots of money and has the heart to do anything for the family. So, Uncle Hammer sells his very fancy Silver Packard car which helps Papa and Mama pay their debt. Mama sacrifices her job when she teaches. She knew that it was better to teach what she believed in and get fired than not teaching what she believed and keeping her job: “I taught some things some folks just didn’t want to hear,” Mama said. Mama is very passionate about teaching and making sure that her students receive an education. Also, Mama knows that education opens the door to more opportunities. Sometimes Mama doesn't teach from the book because she knows that a white person wrote the book. Mama believes that a white person's teachings would take a much different perspective than if was a black author when it comes to
