Resurrection: the action or fact of resurrecting or being resurrected. A Tale of Two Cities (ATTC) is a novel by Charles Dickens about the French revolution. It is told from a narrative point of view, and is one of the most prominent examples of literary resurrection. In the story, there are both subtle, and blatant examples of resurrection. There are no literal resurrections in the story, that isn’t really possible. The resurrections found in this book are figurative, such as someone being saved from certain death. This would be an example of resurrection because the character is basically considered to be dead, but is figuratively resurrected by whatever saved them. Manette being freed from the bastille. The phrase “recalled to life” applies here, and most of the other examples of resurrection we see in this novel. This is considered a resurrection because he was almost dead because of how long he stayed in the bastille. He was also revived in a sense because his mind was almost gone. He was so disoriented and lost from humanity that he could barely think. His brain had to be trained again to interact with humans, it was so bad that he could not even say anything except things that related to his work of making shoes. It is a wonder that Lucie was even able to revive him, his brain was so far gone. It took Lucie years to be able to restore him to what he was.
Jerry Cruncher is a father, husband, banker, and a grave robber. Yep, Mr. Cruncher digs up dead people and sells their body parts. It may sound gruesome, but it’s what people used to do for side money back then. It certainly doesn’t mean it was legal, but it wasn’t really rare. This is an example of resurrection because the first part of bringing someone back to life is taking them out of their grave, right? This is the most literal definition of resurrection in the ATTC, and even this is not literal
