Scout looks around her, “They were all standing. All around us in the balcony on the opposite wall, the negroes were getting to their feet”(283). Atticus had tried his hardest to help Tom. Atticus stood up straight and put his heart into this trial. He was getting mean remarks by many people in town for standing up for what he believed in and trying to save an innocent life. Atticus carried himself confidently throughout the entire book and he was recognized for that. The African American people on the balcony were showing him tremendous respect for trying his best and sticking up for the African American community as human beings. If you have priorities and goals in your life, people respect that you know what you are doing in life and will look up to you as a role model. In the following quote atticus explains to scout why he’s defending tom robinson if people say that it's wrong. “For a number of reasons, the main one is, If i didn't i couldn't hold my head up in town, couldn't represent this country in the legislature, i couldn't even tell you or jem not to do something again.” (100) Some decisions that you have to make are going to be difficult to make. There are times when you will come across priorities or responsibilities that you have might not necessarily want to do. If you have your priorities, goals, and responsibilities organized in your life people will respect your organization and maturity. There are many little things while growing up like making your bed in the morning, doing your homework, and eating politely at the dinner table. These are just some examples of the little things that are your responsibility when you are little. Doing these small things gains respect from parents, it shows your maturity. Even though making your bed in the morning, doing your homework, and eating politely at the dinner table are things that maybe you wouldn't want to do, it is still your responsibility and you will gain respect from your parents for doing
