The characters in Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible, all made a name for themselves. They all want to keep a good name at that. In a town like Salem, reputation plays a huge part especially during the witch-hunt. A reputation is a belief that is held about someone. For example in the Crucible John Proctor is recognized as a proud strong and honest man. The town sees him as a good citizen. Before the play begins we find out that John Proctor has committed adultery with Abigail Williams. Here John is as his punishment-avoidance and obedience stage. “Proctor: looking off, beginning to sweat Thou shalt not kill. Thou shalt not steal Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s goods, nor make unto thee any graven image. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord in vain; Thou shalt have no other gods before me. With some hesitation: Thou shalt remember the Sabbath Day and keep it holy. Pause. Then: Thou shalt honor thy father and mother. Thou shalt not bear false witness. He is stuck. He counts back on his fingers, knowing one is missing. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image. Hale: You have said that twice sir. Proctor, lost: Aye. He is failing for it. Elizabeth, delicately: Adultery, John.” – (Arthur Miller Act II of “The Crucible”). This scene was very ironic because the commandment John can’t remember is the commandment he broke with Abigail Williams. John first beings to notice that Abigail has gone too far when his wife is arrested for witchcraft. “Pontius Pilate! God will not let you wash your hands of this!” – John Proctor (Arthur Miller: The Crucible). He is saying that Hale cannot be like Pontius Pilate, the Roman who judged the trial of Jesus. He believed Jesus was innocent but let others prosecute him. So basically John is saying that Hale cannot get away with putting someone to death who is innocent. Here John is at the social contract
