Is love at first sight real? According to Nicholas Boothman, not only do around 66% of people believe in love at first sight but around 50% believe that they have experienced it. The question becomes not is love at first sight real, but is risking one’s life worth it for someone they have only just met? Not only are the two lovers in The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet like those mentioned before, but also two lovers are teenagers which adds in a whole new dimension. In Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, the main characters’ relationship with each other is weak and shallow due to their rash decisions and risky behaviors.
The weak nature of Romeo and Juliet's relationship causes both of them to make quick, thoughtless decisions. The first example of a rash decision Romeo and Juliet make is when the two get married. Friar Lawrence says to Romeo and Juliet, "Come, come with me, and we will make short work.” (2.6.35), implying that he will marry them quickly so that neither family finds out about the betrayal the two lovers are about to commit. Although it may not seem like it, Romeo and Juliet are standing in Friar Lawrence’s saying their wedding vows only 18 short hours after they met. Not only is there a hatred between their families that has lasted for years that makes this idea insane, but also the fact that these two lovers barely know anything about each other.
