Real courage is fighting for what is right regardless of winning or losing. Atticus Finch defines real courage, and he demonstrates that many times in the novel. The demonstrations that Atticus Finch shows also teaches his kids lessons. Atticus mainly shows real courage during the long period of Tom Robinson’s case. Atticus goes against Maycomb when he takes on the case of defending Tom Robinson. Atticus understands that taking on this case he would become an object of ridicule and no one would forgive him for believing in a black man’s word rather then a white man’s. No matter what people said, standing up for his moral ethic is more important than his reputation. Atticus is “licked” before he begins, he knows that he will not win the case
