In fact, a study was done on young children in school; the tests showed that both colored and white children believed that darker skin tone was neither good nor pretty. Furthermore, many examples of racism was implemented into the government- segregation. Aided by the separate but equal clause, many things including schools, businesses, and restrooms were limited to race.
During this time, many black business owners were surprised to find most of their property vandalized if not destroyed. Yet, being strong willed enabled many African Americans (mostly those in college) to perform sit-ins, boycotts, and other forms of protests. Though many social laws were disobeyed, supremacists still tried to enforce order.
