The Help is a storytelling film which focuses on the experiences of Aibileen, Skeeter, and Minny. The film reveals the inhuman living situation of black maids in Jackson, Mississippi and the widespread discrimination towards black people in South America. This paper would identify and analyze the racism presented in the movie. Different from many other films depicting racism, The Help is not about hate and crime. Instead it tells a warm story full of encouragement: The protagonist in the film are optimistic about their future and fight for a better world through helping with each other, which is quite unique and inspiring.

After Minny was fired by Hilly, it was very difficult for her to find another job even though she was recognized as the best cook among neighbors. Because black maids relied on white families to earn money, rebels against employers could easily cause much trouble. It also prevented many other black maids from contributing to Skeeter’s book because they were afraid of revenge from white employers and lost their jobs. Black people were enforced to live in segmented areas and not allowed to take the same bus with white people. Also, they barely had any chance to develop learning skills and advance their career development due to racism. When one black maid wanted to borrow 75 dollars to support her children went to university, her employers refused to give any help. Notably, very few white people in the movie would like to have an equal talk with black maids like Sketter did, most of their conversation was about command and complaint: they simply believed that black people didn’t deserve it. It is a natural thought to treat ‘colored people ‘with no respect to their rights. That said, the racial discrimination towards black people is institutional but not restricted to any single individual.
