This was possibly the first “new-age” attack on an African-American, and it sparked rebellion in some, while fear in others. To hear of a young black man beat to death by those who are supposed to protect and serve was so uncommon in that day, that it was shocking to hear. Nowadays, it seems every month, there is a new disaster with a police officer and a black victim. The latest case in this being the officer who tased an African-American male after getting pulled over . This racism may not hit “close to home,” but the media is such a part of everyone’s everyday life, it’s almost as if it were. Tray Martin and the tragic events that took place that day is remembered by many. As stand up comedian Katt Williams once said, “We don’t mess with the police anymore. Remember what happened to Tray Martin? Ever since then, black people don’t mess with the police--we are as polite as can be.” After listening to this, it made me question what goes through the minds of people living in areas like this, or wonder what African-Americans think of it.
