My general feelings about racism and white privilege is that it still exists in today’s society. I honestly am fortunate to have a phenotypic appearance of the white race. I can’t imagine the daily discrimination people of color receive. Many examples of white privilege are in large part the result of the privilege of being perceived as an individual rather than as a member of a racial group (Koppleman, 2014, p. 185). The book referenced Steven Spielberg being seen as a director, but Spike Lee is seen as a Black film director. The example that blew my mind was MSNBC’s headline during the 1998 Olympics. The headline read, “American beats out Kwan.” The issue was that both Kwan and the Olympic champion were both Americans.
