Examples Of Racism And Discrimination In Remember The Titans

Overcoming the Odds Racism and discrimination have always been apart of societies unknown mysteries as social issues, which are still inconclusive today. As seen in the film, Remember the Titans, tension was always high between players of the opposing race at the start of the movie. Coach Herman Boone, played by none other than Denzel Washington, quickly changes the atmosphere around the football team and between the players of the opposite race, insisting they compromise or consequences will be distributed accordingly. Boone, who moved to Alexandria to coach football, was named the head coach of T.C. Williams high school replacing all time great, Bill Yoast. Players and parents strongly disagreed with the move and initially intended to quit the sport when the two schools integrated. Soon the constrictions between the players and the community were all sorted out and they begin to play ball. “Remember the Titans” does an excellent job showing the struggles the town of Alexandria face …show more content…
Peer pressure might be a social issue someone first thinks of when they watch the film. Throughout the film peer pressure is exhibited in a couple important scenes. For example, Gary Bertier, the team captain, was riding in his car after a big win and his friends wanted him to speed off to look cool. In the moment Gary too thought the act of speeding would be cool until the action was put forth. Gary sped off into the intersection only to be rudely interrupted a semi crossing at the same time. The two vehicles collided and Gary received the brunt off the damage. He was rushed to the hospital where they pronounced Gary as paralysed from the waist down. With that being said, the peer pressure from his friends and fans ultimately led to a horrible accident and certainly can’t be ignored as another main social issue throughout the
