Today's Long Island is much more diverse than ever. Despite the migration of immigrants and the suburbanization of urban residents, racial and economic segregation of Long Island is still a distinct social issue. This racial prejudice and segregation has a significant impact on students' access to quality education and good job opportunities. Providing better educational opportunities for all students in Long Island will benefit not only the students, but also bring the balanced development and linguistic and cultural diversity to our society as a whole. Research shows that the integrated learning environment can actually help provide students with more opportunities for academic success, eliminate racial stereotypes, and prepare all students…

This reflection will be in response to the field experience that was completed on the 12th of November, 2015 by Matthew Daykin. For my High School field experience, I attended Palmetto Ridge High School and observed both Mrs. Zacher’s ninth grade English class and Mrs. Reid’s ninth grade Science and Math classes. Palmetto Ridge High School (A.K.A. “The Ridge”) is a grade 9-12 school located in Naples, Florida. The Ridge has a total of 1,865 students; 46.33% of the students are listed as identifying as White, 7.29% are listed as identifying as Black, 40.8% of the students identify as Hispanic, 1.39% of the students identify as Asian, 2.63% identify as Indian, 1.29% identify as Multi-Racial, while only 0.27% identify as Hawaiian or Pacific Islander (“Palmetto Ridge High (PRH) School”, 2015). I believe my first lesson during this field experience came about a week before I actually completed my field experience at this location.…

By definition, racial profiling is “the use of race or ethnicity as grounds for suspecting someone of having committed an offense.” This means racial profiling can be done from any race or ethnicity towards any race or ethnicity without any exceptions. One examples of this includes an officer racially profiling and closely looking at an African American rather than any other race with the assumption that he has committed a crime. Another example is an employee in an airport wanting a stricter search on a Muslim with the thought that he will be more likely to commit a crime than anyone else. Global citizenship relates to racial profiling because if someone’s a global citizen, they identify themselves as being part of the world.…

Throughout history, racism and discriminations is something minority groups have had to face. It has been seen in the workplace, in schools, in the criminal justice systems and in places like restaurants and stores. Although many people are more aware of it these days, it is something that is still very present in our lives. According to Richard Shaefer, racism is the feeling and belief that certain groups and races are superior to others. There are different types of racism such as interpersonal racism and structural racism.…

In this Action Research paper, I am going to discuss the demographics and break down of my classroom library, and the possible deficits it presents to the students who populate it. This is significant because the more a child is exposed to a rich and dynamic library of books the better he or she has to be fluent in both reading and writing (Tompkins, 2015). It is also essential to to remember that a lack of culturally variegated texts may have an negative impact on children. I will first discuss the context that contains all the breakdown of the district, secondly the individual makeup of what my school looks like and finally represent the individual classroom demographics.…

One of the greatest foundations of racial issues in my opinion is Racial Profiling. Racial profiling is the act of suspecting or targeting a person of a certain race based on a stereotype about their race. In main words, it’s just basically stereotyping. Racial profiling seems to be big in law enforcement. A good example of racial profiling by the police is when A Hispanic driver is stopped in a "white" neighborhood because he "doesn’t belong there" or "looks to be out of place and/or a group of black teenagers are pulled over because of the kind of car they are driving.…

From my understanding, sociologist believe that race is a social construct because it is natural for us to look at different phenomenon and group them together. In this case, the race and nationality of people. It may seem obvious to us or natural that people are different based on their physical features, language and other things that separate us from one another, but in the end we are all the same. Reality proves that no matter what color or country you are derived from we are all equal. We all feel the same emotions of pain, sadness and happiness.…

Race vs. Ethnicity. Race can be de defined as a group of persons related by common descent or hereditary. Ethnicity can be defined as an ethnic group; a social group that shares a common and distinctive culture, religion and language. Race and ethnicity have many similarities but also many differences, your race can sometimes narrow down your ethnicity and if you know what ethnicity you are, you definitely know your race. You can tell a person’s race just by their physical appearance, but ethnicity is so much more complex, you can see the color of a person’s skin but that does not really tell you much information of their ethnic background.…
