The main idea in the text is racial discrimination. The help gives perspectives of two black maids and Miss Skeeter. The two black maids are, Aibileen who works for one of Miss Skeeter’s friends Elizabeth Leefolt. The other maid is Minny Jackson who at first was working for Miss Hilly’s (another one of Miss Skeeter’s friends) mother but then started working for Miss Celia Foote after she got fired. Through these perspectives we see the racial discrimination that they get because of their colour. An example of the racial discrimination in the novel is with the Home Help Sanitation Initiative. This examples shows the separation that there was between the white and black. The black were seen as second class and weren’t seen as equal to the white, all because of their colour. They weren’t judged on their personality, they were judged on their colour. All the racial discrimination that black people got in this novel was all based on stereotypes and what stories people have told that have been passed down. Miss Hilly saying that the black carry different diseases is based on stereotypes not on facts and the help shows how influentially stereotypes can be.
