From my understanding, sociologist believe that race is a social construct because it is natural for us to look at different phenomenon and group them together. In this case, the race and nationality of people. It may seem obvious to us or natural that people are different based on their physical features, language and other things that separate us from one another, but in the end we are all the same. Reality proves that no matter what color or country you are derived from we are all equal. We all feel the same emotions of pain, sadness and happiness. It was simply created to categorize the different races of humans. I don't see this is a negative thing, unless certain groups are treated differently because of their race which we are all aware happens much too frequently. This is the same thing we do with animals, there are many breeds of dogs. We don't just say all dogs are dogs, they have differently characteristics that place them in different groups. The same thing is done for humans which is why I believe socialists say that race is a social construct.
