¶ “You are pulling down heaven and raising up a whore”. Arthur Miller wrote the Crucible in 1952. It is about somebody who calls witch and gets a bunch of people killed. There are many examples of propaganda found in this story. Some types of propaganda that are found in the Crucible are stereotyped, fear, and bandwagon. The first type of propaganda used in this story is stereotyping. Stereotyping is a biased belief about a group of people. stereotyping was used when Tituba is singing in Barbados and dancing around a Calderon. Tituba and the girls were out in the woods, dancing and having a ceremony. Reverend Pariss sees the girls and Tituba and gets mad at Abigail: Abigail then says that Tituba was doing spells and everyone believes Abigail because she is from Barbados and is singing and dancing around a Calderon. Another example of stereotyping in this story is when Marry warren gives Elizabeth proctor the poppet. MarryWarren gives the poppet to Elizabeth to set the plot for Abigail’s plan to accuse Elizabeth of being a witch. This is stereotyping because witches make voodoo dolls. Fear is instilling anxiety and panic in somebody or something. For example, when Tituba admits to being a witch because she is afraid of being hanged. Tituba admits that she is afraid. Tituba knows that she is not a witch and it is Abigail’s idea to go in the woods, but she knows if she doesn’t admit to it she will be hanged. Another time fear was used in the story is when Abigail threatens the girls. Abigail tells the girls if they don’t lie and say Tituba possessed them, and then she will hurt them. Abigail also told them to lie about the blood being drunk. This propaganda was effective because Abigail got away with a lot because she could scare the other girls and gets them to be on her side.
