1984 Essay
Propaganda is a way the government communicates to the people to influence their opinions. It is usually bias information shared to the people in a society to promote the party's political cause. Propaganda has been used by governments throughout history to get people to believe in their ideology and gain support, using different posters to generate different types of emotions like guilt, sense of unity, pride, and patriotism. In the novel 1984, by George Orwell the party uses propaganda to control the citizens of oceana, using fear by threatening and punishing the people of oceana when they show even the slightest of disloyalty towards the party.

The most powerful tool the party uses as propaganda are the telescreens. The telescreens are an “oblong metal plaque like a dulled mirror” (Orwell 4). It is used by the party to send constant messages to the people in oceana. The telescreens broadcast news that is manipulated by the party to make the government appear to be effective and efficient (Stone). One type of propagandas the telescreen broadcast regularly is a program called “the two minutes of hate”; when this program comes on most of the people in oceana stops what they're doing to watch the program. The program usually includes Goldstein, the face of the rebellion (Stone). Two minutes of hate brings patriotism out of the citizens loyal to the party but for other citizens, like Winston Smith, it was horrible. Many politicians use propaganda during election season and unlike propaganda in history, propaganda today rely heavily on the internet, social media, and news outlets. During the 2016 United States presidential election Donald Trump used social media a lot to share his ideas to the public and even discredit opposing presidential candidates. He also had different forms of propaganda like the slogan “Make America Great Again”, and like other candidates they went to different cities in the U.S. and spoke publicly about their vision of what they want to accomplish during their presidential term when they get elected. But the highlight of this presidential election was how Donald Trump used social media to convince the citizens that he is the right candidate and that his ideas will make America a better country. Another example of propaganda is the “Black Lives Matter” motto, it inspired many people in the United States to start peaceful protest like taking a knee during the national anthem in an attempt to end racism in the world. Propaganda in 1984 is different from propaganda in the the United States because citizens in the U.S. have the freedom to think and speak their mind without getting in any trouble with the party and people from oceana are forced into the party’s ideology whether they agree or disagree with their ideas and if they do not
