“The Scarlet Ibis”: Brother’s Guilt Keeping pride in control might be one of the most hardest things in the world, because pride can be a destructive force. In the short story “The Scarlet Ibis”, written by James Hurst, Brother is guilty. It shows that Brother and his pride harmed his little brother, Doodle by: pushing him too hard just because of his disability and showing cruelty to him, and Brother knowing it, and still continuing to do it.

“I purposely walked fast, and even though he kept up, his face turned red and his eyes became glazed.” (page 350). He was clearly pushing Doodle too hard, and was told by the doctor not to. It seems as if Brother didn’t even care about Doodle’s health. This was all because he didn’t want a disabled brother to ruin his pride. He knows that when his brother fell, he had, had too much. He had pushed him to far to the point to where he could not longer stand, and instead of helping him he ran off without him. With that, Doodle was harmed in an emotional and physical way. He screamed after his brother, “Don’t leave me brother!” But I guess it didn’t matter to Brother.

“There is within me (and with sadness I have watched in others) a knot of cruelty borne by the stream of love, much as our blood sometimes bears the seed of our destruction, and at times I was mean to Doodle.” (page 346, paragraph 5). This basically explains that brother knew that everyone had this cruelty in them, but also love, and in this case his cruelty only left a single stream of love. This is part of the reason of Doodle’s death. His cruelty to him.

“The knowledge that Doodle’s and my plans had come to a naught was bitter, and that streak of cruelty awakened.” (page 353). His cruelty did overpower him, his pride tied in with this cruelty making Brother guilty of his brother’s
