Examples Of Pride In The Hobbit

“Pride goes before destruction and an arrogant attitude precedes a fall.” (Proverbs 16:18) Have you ever heard that quote? Do you know what it means? It means pride can be a very bad thing. However, when you take pride in your own hard work and what you have achieved, pride is a good thing. Pride means different things to different people. Thinking too much of yourself is clearly a bad thing at times. The character Thorin from The Hobbit is a good example. Thorin often thinks that he can do anything and that he knows everything and this gets him into trouble. He has a very inflated sense of self-importance and in the end it gets him killed. The Greeks called this character flaw hubris. Of course thinking too little of oneself may be bad. It can make you insecure and not confident at all in your own abilities. This means you may have a low sense of self-worth, and you might not take opportunities that could present themselves. In The Hobbit, the character Bilbo thought little of himself because he was a hobbit and they are smaller than dwarves. As a result, Bilbo was a stay at home type person. His friend, however, talked him into going on a quest and his wisdom helped prevent infighting between three factions. …show more content…
The best way to make sure it is positive is to balance it out. For example, the supports for a building must always be balanced. If there are more supports on one side than the other, the whole building comes crashing down. Be proud of what you have earned and what you have achieved but don’t think that you know everything or can do anything. I believe that the following quote sums up the meaning of pride very well. “There are two kinds of pride, both good and bad. Good pride represents our dignity and self-respect. Bad pride is the deadly sin of superiority that reeks of conceit and arrogance.” (John C.
