When Pride Kills Pride and ego are sometimes all it takes to become a murder victim. In Edgar Allen Poe’s short story “The Cask of Amontillado” the main character Montresor is aware of these human foibles. Montresor uses his enemy, Fortunato’s, ego to trick him into walking into his own doom, even giving Fortunato the chance to leave and for Montresor to seek help from another adversary Luchesi. Montresor’s knowledge of human flaws such as pride and ego, allow him the perfect opportunity to murder Fortunato. Fortunato’s ego is well-known. Montresor comes to Fortunato exclaiming his regret for not finding Fortunato sooner so he could offer an opinion on a cask of Amontillado.
