Skimming the surface:Preliminary Judgment
In the book To Kill A Mockingbird By Harper Lee, set in the early 1930’s in the small town of Maycomb County, Alabama. Two kids, Jem and Scout Finch grow up with first-hand accounts of racism and revenge and preliminary judgements that ruin people's lives. These events that happen to those around them are part of the reason that Jem and Scout lost their innocence in other words, how the mockingbird got killed. , Lee uses the act of preliminary judgement to show how it can affect people more than just on a social scale, including Tom Robinson, Ms.Dubose, Dolphus Raymond, and Boo Radley. Lee uses preliminary judgment this in the book to teach a lesson about stereotyping and the effects of just seeing people on the surface or viewing them by one person or one thing.
Tom Robinson was tried for a rape and sent to prison even after sufficient evidence in his favor. The main reason in the book for him losing is the reason that he was African American in the deep South; a racist place. On page 285 Jem and Atticus say,” How could they do it, how could they? I don’t know, but they did it. They’ve done it before and they did it tonight and they’ll do it again and when they do it.” This scene took place after the court's decision of guilty came in and Atticus and Jem got back to the house. When Jem was forced to read to Ms.Dubose he thought it was awful but for her it was probably one of the only forms of human interaction to help her through this rough time. Because of the way people only look at her for the things she does and not wanting to get to know her better and understand why she acts the way she does. But, because people are reluctant to figure out more about people or get to know them better the same false image of her stays throughout their life. She develops
