Examples Of Prejudice In To Kill A Mockingbird

To kill a mockingbird has a lot of examples of people being prejudice. According to google, being prejudice means to have a “preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience”. In some homes there is always a black person working as a maid in the white person's home. The town would say things like “Jem, I ain’t ever heard of a nigger snowman,” (Lee, 68). Mayella's’ father is an example of someone who does not like colored people. In trial Tom was trialed and found guilty just because he was black. A man named Boo Radley was known as a crazy man in the town. Jem and Scout are being told why they’re in a church for black people because they are white. In Maycomb colored people are always mistreated. Everyone in the town …show more content…
Just because he stayed inside all day and no one really sees him, they made up lies and rumors about him. They said that he killed his family and they were gonna send him to a mental hospital but his father said no to sending him there. The town doesn’t know if this is true or not, but they believe it anyways. They don’t even have proof or evidence about this statement, they just assume it’s true. One day Calpurnia took Jem and Scout to her church. When they got inside the church Calpurnias’ friends were saying “I wants to know why you bringin‘ white chillun to nigger church.” (Lee, 120) . What Calpurnia did was something brave. Instead of leaving or causing a scene, she told them “It’s the same God is it?” and stayed in the church. This part proved that white people are not the only people racist in the town, even the colored people can be racist to the white people. The main point is the whole town is prejudice against each other. It is not only the whites that are prejudice, and it is not the colored people who are prejudice. There are only a few good people in the town who accept everyone no matter what their color is. It would be nice for the whole town to be like this, but it will more than likely never happen. Even though Maycomb is a small town, most small towns are full of prejudice people. You will find prejudism no matter where you go though, and that is sad because we should all accept each other and be friendly with
