Many believe that physical power makes people feel stronger, but it also can hurt others in many ways. In Unbroken, Louis was in a race at the Olympics. Once the race started, he knew he had a target on his back. Other racers were stepping on his feet, elbowing, and even punching him (Hillenbrand, 2010). This, as well as putting Louis at a major disadvantage, lit a fire in him. He was too far behind to win, but he ran as fast as he could. He is a huge, fire-breathing dragon who everyone on the journey was afraid of. Smaug held an enormous amount of gold products and that is what the group is after (Tolkien, 1937). Eventually, all of Smaug’s power comes back to him in an extremely negative way. Smaug flew toward Lake-Town and is noticed by a guard. Since Smaug has strong scales covering his body, he is not afraid of being noticed. One of the soldiers notices a spot on Smaug’s body with no scale covering it. He sends a hail-mary arrow shot up and hits him right in the uncovered spot. This kills Smaug, proving his power being too much for him to handle (Tolkien, 1937). This power must have made Smaug’s self esteem extremely high. He thought that he was unable to be killed, but this was clearly not true. Power can get to your head and sometimes prove to be too much to handle.
