1. One event that I find to be important is when Gatsby avoids getting a ticket by the police by showing them a card from the police commissioner. This event gives us a better understanding of Gatsby’s character and power. He is evading the law by using his connections to a person in power, which shows that he is not afraid to use his power to break the law. It also shows how much power Gatsby truly has. Since he is able to avoid being punished for breaking the law, he is able to do other actions that might otherwise be prohibited.

Gatsby has an extremely large amount of power that may not be obvious at first sight. However, he reveals it subtly through how he lives his life. For example, when Gatsby is pulled over by the cops he pulls out “a white card from his wallet” which he uses to avoid getting a ticket (Fitzgerald 68). This shows how corrupt Gatsby can be, as he flagrantly evades the law. Gatsby does not respect the law, as he is willing to use his connection to the commissioner to break the law without any consequences. Gatsby also breaks the law every time he hosts a party. He serves alcohol at his parties, where attendees can drink “five or six cocktails” without any repercussions (106). Prohibition is occurring at the time, so he typically should not be allowed to serve liquor. Since so many people attend his party, it is known that alcohol is served there; Regardless, no one is ever caught by police or arrested for drinking. This shows how Gatsby is able to again avoid the police and get around having to obey the law. He is able to freely do what he wishes without having to worry about being caught by the police.
