People naturally craved power and believe money can achieve that. Some people can use that power for the good of everybody and some use power for their own good. Most people are wrong about the sources of power, having money only does half the job. Power comes from gender, race and education and used for people’s selfish desires as seen in the book Kindred by Octavia Butler.
Gender plays a role in obtaining power. Males and females don’t have an equal chance of getting that power. The book Kindred has two settings, one is in the 1800’s and the other is in 1970’s. In both of those times gender is an issue. In the book the main character is a black female named Dana who is married to a white man named Kevin. Dana time travels from the 1970’s to the 1800’s a couple of times. The reason she is going back and forth is to make sure a man named Rufus lives long enough to give birth to her great grandmother and secured her bloodline. When she goes back to the 1800’s, she is in Baltimore, Maryland where slavery existed. Rufus was still a boy when she first traveled there. He was the son of the plantation owner. Especially in the 1800’s, race was an important thing as to how much power you have. African Americans were slaves because of their skin color, and white people had took advantage over that. Men like Rufus and Tom were able to live comfortably because of that advantage. “You have to say it he insisted. Or young Master or...Master…”(30). Rufus was taught from a young age that he was superior because of his race. “...the law says he owns me now”(167). Alice who is a young slave thinks she belongs to Rufus because of her race. And that she must do everything he asks from her. Kevin traveled to 1800’s with Dana and was received much warmer greeting. “She belongs to Mr. Kevin Franklin here”(69).
