In a normal day to day life everybody owns a certain amount of power but with great power comes great responsibility. The Fellowship of the Ring is a book about Frodo and his friends on the journey to destroy the Ring, a device created by Sauron with the purpose to rule and enslave the minds of the species on Middle-earth. During the journey to destroy the Ring, Frodo and his friends must try to resist the Ring’s corruptive powers. In the Fellowship of the Ring, J.R.R. Tolkien uses various characters to show how power corrupts those with weak inner strength. Boromir was a man who was a member of the Fellowship. After some time around the ring’s great power it finally corrupted him, and lead him into betraying his friend:

Boromir’s inner strength weakened day by day until he finally snapped. Gollum was originally named Smeagol, his friend Deagol possessed a ring. The power was so overwhelming that he killed Deagol so the Ring would be his. “He caught Deagol by the throat and strangled him, because the gold looked so bright and beautiful. Then he put the ring on his finger”(52). After time the great power corrupted him turning him into a cave dweller. His inner strength was very weak, he let the power get to him leading him to kill his friend. Sam is a hobbit, who is very loyal to the Fellowship. Power was not on his mind, he wanted to do whatever he could to help take down Sauron. “ ‘I made a promise, Mr Frodo. A promise. "Don't you leave him Samwise Gamgee." And I don't mean to. I don't mean to.’ ” Sam knows the corruptive nature of the Ring, but he won’t leave Frodo. Sam is one of the few members of the fellowship that isn't being corrupted by the power in the Ring. The reason he was not corrupted was because his inner strength was strong, and allowed him to not care about
