Despite having said that, Creon, under any circumstances, has no authority to forbid the burial of Polyneices, or for that matter, any of the dead. In addition, although Antigone should be disciplined for her stubbornness and refusal to abide by Creon’s orders, such harsh punishment was simply unreasonable and unnecessary, especially when considering she did the bare minimum to ensure brother’s soul would rest in peace. Furthermore, our elders have looked to Creon to direct our city into a new beginning. And as our king, Creon has pledged to keep Thebes safe and to protect the citizens he regards as his subjects.…

It may be overlooked if the play is not read carefully, on the other hand it is very evident that hubris is Creon’s largest flaw. It can be seen in multiple instances based on his own actions and the words from other characters. Throughout the entire play, Creon does not take anyone else’s words seriously. He believes that as the king, his word is final which means he fails to even consider the fact that his decisions may be wrong. When the sentry suggests that “this could possibly be the work of gods”, Creon is quick to dismiss the idea that the gods would care about a traitor who attacked the city.…

His pride is too consumable, keeping him from being able to bring himself to his senses and admit that he is wrong. Creon even says “In all of Thebes, you’re the only one who looks at things this way” in lines 576-577, after Antigone argued with him that no one honored the law Creon had created. Creon is seeing Antigone as someone who believes all the wrong things, too stubborn to open his mind and see that she could have sensible reasonings to her beliefs, that he could be doing the wrong thing. Additionally, in the beginning of the play, the reasoning in Creon placing a law forbidding a proper burial of Polyneices was because he had fought along the enemy’s side. Creon did believe that he was doing the right thing himself but did not let his mind reveal itself to the consequences the gods could place upon him.…

In the beginning of the play, Antigone shows sympathy for her brother who is legally not allowed to be buried, but also anger towards Creon for making this law. She states, “But the unhappy corpse of Polyneices he has proclaimed to all the citizens, they say, no man may hide in a grave or funeral, but leave unwept, unburied, a dainty treasure, for the birds that see him, for their feasts delight,” explaining that Creon has told the people of the city that Polyneices is to rot and have his corpse eaten by the animals (Sophocles). Creon shows hate towards Polyneices for saying this, by telling the people of the city that Polyneices shall rot and be forgotten without anyone respecting his death and giving him a funeral or burial (Sophocles).…
