Throughout life women face discrimination wherever we go. We get discriminated in our work place, home and even in prison. OITNB shows the audience the constant battles with discrimination and authority. In my definition authority means power you have over someone or a group of individuals. There are scenes on this show that gives the audience an inside look on the power dynamic of a prison system. Men use their power over women who pose a threat to their norms of society. In episode three of OITNB “Lesbian Request Denied”, show the characters going through hard times and many power struggles that are not in the women favor. The scene in the electrical shop, the guard is really rude and doesn’t really care about his job or if anyone is doing the work. Watson is an inmate that does not take no crap from anyone and always tries to one up people, but in the end that is her downfall. CO Luscheuk is a guard that use his power for the wrong reasons and makes people lives miserable by not caring or just not really doing anything he is supposed to do. The scene when the alarm goes off, Chatman asks questions about why are they were getting on the floor, Watson replied, “Because the white man said so” and Nichols agrees with the statement. After the screwdriver goes missing, everyone is subjected to have a pat down by an officer and the man for the job is Pornstache. He uses his power in order to cop a feel on each of the female inmates getting his rocks off by doing so. Watson is not down with male officers “copping a feel” while she is being searched and even suggest getting a female guard to complete the task. Her blatant statement trying to overpower Caputo’s actions makes her get sent to solitary confinement.
