Power Corrupts in Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien tells the story of the beginning of the Ring’s journey. The Ring is first held by Bilbo Baggins, then by Frodo Baggins for the rest of the book. Frodo travels with friends whom he has had since childhood and friends which he makes along the way of his journey. Frodo brings the Ring from the Shire to Rivendell where the Fellowship of the Ring is formed. The Ring travels with the fellowship until it is broken and Sam and Frodo travel along their own path. The theme Tolkien was placing in the story is that power corrupts people. Tolkien demonstrates this theme early in the book through Gandalf who represents the wise old, Bilbo who represents the corrupted old and Frodo who represents the uncorrupted youth. …show more content…
Bilbo holds the Ring for a very long time and becomes corrupted by it. Bilbo uses the ring when he plays the prank on his party guests and disappears from the party and from the Shire. The first time it is shown that Bilbo is corrupted is when he becomes defensive when he tries to leave the Ring behind. Bilbo accuses Gandalf of trying to take the Ring from him, and tries to leave without leaving the Ring. One other time Bilbo is shown as corrupt is when Frodo shows him in the Ring in Rivendell. When Frodo shows Bilbo the Ring and then it is described as a shadow coming between them and Frodo feels the urge to hit Bilbo. Bilbo later apologizes about the burden of carrying the
