Power Corrupts in Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien tells the story of the beginning of the Ring’s journey. The Ring is first held by Bilbo Baggins, then by Frodo Baggins for the rest of the book. Frodo travels with friends whom he has had since childhood and friends which he makes along the way of his journey. Frodo brings the Ring from the Shire to Rivendell where the Fellowship of the Ring is formed. The Ring travels with the fellowship until it is broken and Sam and Frodo travel along their own path. The theme Tolkien was placing in the story is that power corrupts people. Tolkien demonstrates this theme early in the book through Gandalf who represents the wise old, Bilbo who represents the corrupted old and Frodo who represents the uncorrupted youth.
