This is true, because Petruchio agrees to marry Kate with only the knowledge of her extremely rude demeanor and extremely wealthy family. He also finds it okay to make up different lies to receive Baptista’s (Kate’s father) approval of the marriage. Lastly, Petruchio pulls off this stunt with Kate in order to retrieve more money. One of Petruchio’s most significant lines from the play occurred when he was asking Hortensio to help him find a wife in Padua, “I come to wive it wealthily in Padua; / If wealthily, then happily in Padua” (1.2.61-62). The fact that he does not care about who he will marry and is only concerned with how much her family can offer as a dowry, demonstrates how his character is blinded by riches and overlooks the true meaning of marriage.…

Since the Induction of The Taming of the Shrew, the contrast between internal and external is set up when the drunk Christopher Sly believes he has been transformed into a lord by a mere change in his garments and surroundings. This first transformation initiates the theme that clothes do not determine the person. Strip away the costumes, and we are all equal. Later at the wedding, the late and disheveled Petruchio diminishes the importance of clothing declaring “To me she’s married, not unto my clothes” (3.2.110). Although this statement holds some truth, an important event like a wedding requires a formal attire as means of showing respect.…

Yet, the characters he creates, mostly Claudio, are easily mislead through one word, “disloyal.”…

“Thy husband is thy lord, thy keeper,” (Katherina: Act 5 Scene 2) To what extent do you feel Katherina’s personality has radically changed at the end of the play, or is she just performing the role of a traditional Elizabethan woman? Katherina, as one of the most complex characters in Shakespeare’s ‘The Taming of the Shrew’, provokes audiences everywhere to question the sincerity of her conformation at the end of the play. Katherina is presented to the audience as a witty, independent, resilient woman and as a result of her behaviour is labelled a ‘shrew’. It soon becomes apparent that she is somewhat feared by men– “From all such devils, good lord deliver us!”…

Towards the conclusion of any Shakespearean comedy comes a wedding. Unique to this play the wedding is between characters that are in a subplot to the script rather than the main plot that involves Katherine and Petruchio. He points to the play’s emphasis on temporary transformation as a means of winning love. Lucentio and Hortensio both dress up in order to court Bianca, and each man “receives the appropriate reward,” in this case wives who disguised their personalities (Daniell 73). Following this pattern, Kate’s and Petruccio’s newfound gentleness would also seem to be an illusion, a disguise of sorts that would be unsatisfying it if turned out to be genuine. Given the play-within-a-play structure of The Taming of the Shrew, it is natural to focus on the theatrics of the characters and assume Kate and Petruccio are using such artifice to cultivate a public persona that allows both of them to find public acceptance while keeping “all their contradictions—and energies—very much alive and kicking” behind closed doors (78). Kate submits to her new husband because she comes to understand the benefits of it, but this makes her smarter, not weaker.…
