Approximately 91% of women are unhappy with their bodies and resort to dieting to achieve their ideal body shape. Unfortunately, only 5% of women naturally possess the body type often portrayed by Americans in the media (dosomething.org). Our society’s expectations are unreal. The pressure of having a “perfect body” is becoming overwhelming because teenagers are coming obsessed with their weight, which causes girls to be self conscious about themselves, which comes from companies using thin models for advertisement.

Social media isn’t helping to spread awareness on popular websites teenagers use today. YouTube male stars Nash Grier, Cameron Dallas, and JC Caylen post videos titled, “What Guys Look For In Girls” or “What Girls Should and Should Not Do” (The Pressure for Perfection is becoming too much, www.huffpost.com). Social media isn’t the only reason why girls are becoming so self conscious. Sometimes the people who are around the most, can hurt the most. For example, one’s peers. One’s peers can often convince teens they should look a certain way. Girls already have a ton of pressure from comparing themselves to celebrities. So, that means they shouldn’t also be getting it from their friends. They don’t need it online also. Plus, parents should be paying more attention to what their child watches and who their friends are. While social media can spread a mass of positivity in one’s self esteem, but sometimes it can turn terrible and lead to negative thoughts in one’s head. There is some truth in that argument that social media is a great place for positivity. However, it would help if one’s parents look at titles of the YouTube video their kids watch and how many likes their child gets on an Instagram picture so they can be more
