Examples Of Personal Rivalry In The Crucible

In the play “The Crucible”, common grudges and personal rivalries are like a marionette pulling strings within the courtroom of Salem throughout the witch trials. It seems as if everyone is searching for a way to benefit from this outrage, and those who attempt, usually succeed. The following 3, are only a few examples of how grudges and personal rivalries worked their way into the witch trials of Salem.

Beginning with a personal rivalry, Thomas Putnam gets his daughter to testify against Mr.Jacobs for witchcraft to get the land he owns. After the court decides that Jacobs is a witch and he is hung, Giles makes an uproar about Putnam’s obvious plan, “Giles: My proof is there! Pointing to the paper. If Jacobs hangs for a witch he forfeit up his property - that’s law! And there is none but Putnam with the; coin to buy so great a piece. This man is killing his neighbors for their land!” (96pg online). The quote shows that Giles truly knows that the act of

In the duration of Act 1, John is talking to Abigail about how he doesn’t want to be involved with her anymore and she says, Abigail: “She is blackening my name in the village! She is telling lies about me! She is a cold, sniveling woman, and you bend to her!”(1110pg). Thus shows the grudge and rivalry she has with Elizabeth because she wants John. John and Abigail technically are both to blame, but Abigail is the one who pushed Salem brink and made them the way they are: delusional people who claim others are witches to protect themselves or to get rid of someone they have a grudge or personal rivalry with. The whole time Abigail tries to defend her “needle in the stomach story” in court, she is indeed manipulating the court to achieve her revenge! Pulling heart strings, left and right, as well as spewing pure

The Crucible by Arthur Miller Is much more than just a dramatization of a Witch Hunt but instead is an example of human weakness, hypocrisy and vindictiveness. Throughout the Witch Trials people in Salem were able to seek revenge on their enemies, human weakness, and show the outright hypocrisy of the witch trials as a whole. Throughout The Crucible you see examples of these three elements through Abigail, Mrs.Putnam, Parris, and many other characters. Quotes and examples from the text will show how The Crucible was a clear illustration of these elements through the storyline, conflicts between characters and the play itself. Cruelty in Perspective Contrary to popular belief, I would like to argue that John Proctor is the root of all cruelty in the play The Crucible. His actions towards Elizabeth, Abigail, and even himself reflect how cruelty affects not only the victim but also the perpetrator. Elizabeth Proctor, the wife of John Proctor, was subject to cruelty in several emotional ways.…

Giles Corey is wrongfully accused and tortured to death, despite having innocent and reasonable motives, filled with both resentment and curiosity. Giles is an old man, old enough to maintain a hateful relationship between the Putnams and him, which started a long time ago with Thomas Putnam’s grandfather and Giles fighting over land. He says to Proctor with Putnam in the room, “...he nearly willed away my north pasture but he knew I’d break his fingers before he’d set his name to it” (32). This long-lasting resentment Giles clutches inside his heart builds the fire needed for him to accuse Thomas later, by saying to Judge Danforth: “If Jacobs hangs for a witch he forfeit up his property---that’s law! And there is none but Putnam with the coin to buy so great a piece.…

In the late 17th century, an explosive epidemic of a victimization of disparate people struck small villages and big cities all over the civilized world. This hunt for black sheep within society was used primarily by the accusers for ‘airing out’ the silent judgements they had made of people that weren’t to their liking. And in Salem, Massachusetts, this instant power of accusation by testimony placed enormous amounts of pressure on the leading figures of the small village. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, some rise to the pressures shoved onto them by the people, while others weaken and fall to their power-hungry neighbors and their accusations. According to Arthur Miller and his work, Reverend Parris’s adulation, Reverend Hale’s stubbornness,…

Arthur Miller has shown Putnam to be a vindictive person, who believes himself wronged when he does not get his way (such as when the candidate he backed was not chosen for the Ministry). However, it is arguable that Putnam’s main motive is greed and not vengeance, for he is also shown to be a greedy man for land (Giles Corey accused him of asking his daughter to cry out George Jacobs for witchcraft in order to be able to buy his land, “The day his daughter cried out Jacobs, he said she’d given him a fair gift of…
