Throughout the play, fear proves to have resulted in persecution. One of the first to be accused was Tituba, servant to Reverend Parris. Tituba brought the girls to the woods to cast spells and dance. She is accused for practicing witchcraft and arrested. As she was beaten, she figured out that if she confessed, she would be saved. In fear of being beaten again, she lists two other women she “saw” with the devil himself. Sarah Good and Sarah Osburne. Abigail Williams, former servant to the Proctors, told the girls that if they told the truth, there would be consequences. Ann and Thomas Putnam were very unfortunate. In total, they had 8 children. Only 1 of the 8 survived. Rebecca and Francis Nurse were very fortunate when it came to their children. They had 11 children and they all survived. Rebecca and Francis had many children who grew up to have children of their own. Ann Putnam had such strong jealousy for Rebecca. Rebecca had 11 children and Ann had only one. That jealousy morphed into hatred. This hatred made Ann want revenge. Revenge came in the form of the witch trials. Rebecca was accused of sending out her spirits to kill Ann’s 7 children. Rebecca never confessed to that ridiculous accusation and was hung. Abigail Williams once worked for the Proctors. Elizabeth Proctor found out that Abigail and John were having an affair and kicked her out. When Abigail was kicked out, she became furious. She wanted revenge. If she accused Elizabeth of witchcraft, she would be gone and Abigail believed that John would run to her. One day in court, Mary Warren was sewing a poppet for Elizabeth. Abigail saw her place the needle in the poppet’s stomach for safe keeping and used it to her advantage. After the poppet was given to Elizabeth, Abigail stabbed herself in the stomach and ran into the courthouse. She accused Elizabeth of sending her spirit out to kill her.
