In the movie Lean on Me, Joe Clark persuades the staff and students that hard work is necessary in order to be successful through the use of pathos, logos and ethos. One of the successful ways that he persuades them is using pathos, he appeals to their emotion. First, he calls 100 students on to the stage and kicks them out because they were a threat to the other students. It might make students upset but it send a message that need to be made. First, Mr. Clark uses his position as principal to show power and convince the students they need to pass the basic skills test or they will shut down the school. When he introduces himself to the students he immediately shows dominance by kicking the students out of his school. He tells them that they need to get their act together and start taking responsibility for their actions. He also tells them they are in control of their life and they need to make the right choices. They later start a countdown so they know how much time they have left to prepare, this drives them on. This is successful because it motivates the students to push themselves and work even harder to reach that goal. Secondly, when taking to the teachers he makes more than half of them put their hands in the air. He tells them that 70% of the students failed and this will be the position they are in if they don't step up and start teaching. This is effective because it send a powerful message to the teachers that they better start taking responsibility and teach the kids. Lastly, in his final speech to the students, he says they have 1 more hour until the test and they worked hard for 100 days straight and this is their chance to prove themselves to the doubters.
