Beowulf In the epic poem dubbed Beowulf, Christian and Pagan ideas are displayed as Beowulf is on his journey to fights the monsters in the story. The first that is displayed is Christianity and it is shown throughout the entire story.
In the epic story Beowulf, Christianity helps guide the characters through the story. In the source ,”Christian Elements”, evidences say that “The fight would have ended straight away if God had not guarded me”. Thus Beowulf would have lost the fight if God did not have his back. In the episode “Beowulf” in the epic story Beowulf, the author states, "God must decide who will be given to deaths' cold grip”. This means that it is up to God to decide who will survive the battle not fate. Throughout the story Beowulf God is acknowledged as Beowulf's protector. In the source

Basically a warrior must be true to himself as well as to God to be protected by Him. Another example of evidence is “It is a wonder to say how in His great spirit God gives wisdom to mankind, land and earlship. He possesses power over all things. At times He lets the thought of a man of high lineage move in delight”. (Christian elements) So basically anything that can be achieved can only be achieved through God. Another piece of evidence when the article says “what he has long held seems to him too little, angry-hearted he covets, no plated rings does he give in men’s honor, and then he forgets and regards not his destiny because of what God, Wielder of Heaven, has given him before, his portion of glories”(Christian Elements). So this piece of evidence

The Christian symbols and representations apparent in Grendel, his mother, and the parallel between Heorot and the cave are balances between good and evil. A brief history of the poem is offered due to the fact that the reader should know why the second part of the poem is so debatable. By looking at the fight with the dragon and Beowulf’s pride it is obvious that there was a shift from the Old Testament to the morals of Christian ideology and of Beowulf’s beginning to his end. He fought in a society where fighting was life. He began a hero fighting evil and died with pride in fighting.…

Chapter II- Nexus Between Beowulf and Batman Though these epic tales were created about 1000 years apart, the story of Batman and the story of Beowulf actually have a lot in common. These two characters are indeed heroes in their actions and are praised by the people in their society; they fight a foe which can only be beaten by them and they do such things for unselfish reasons. “Beowulf had brought his king Horses and treasures- as a man must Not weaving nets for malice for his comrades Preparing their death in the dark, secret, cunning tricks” Beowulf and Batman both do not have any superpowers, however they are very strong, something that can be achieved by any ordinary men, by making that strength normal rather…

My knowledge quest is, “What were the different religion origins used during the Old English Period and how can you tell them apart?” During this week’s reading I was able to identify the many examples of Christianity and paganism throughout “Beowulf.” Throughout the poem we see the many references to God and we find them since the very beginning of the poem, when Grendel listen to the story of God’s creation, "The Almighty making the earth, shaping These beautiful plains marked off by oceans ... made quick with Life. " We also see Beowulf thanking God for the gifts he has given. We see the Christian message when Beowulf goes to fight Grendel and is not afraid, because it is God who decides who is to die in battle.…

He also could not have received victory if God had not sent it first. God has not shown to help villains in Beowulf. God even repels evil since When Grendel “lived/In Herot, when the night hid him, he never/Dared to touch king Hrothgar’s glorious/Throne, protected by God--- God,/Whose love Grendel could not know” (lines 81-85). God is shown to protect good people like Beowulf and Hrothgar but actively go against or ignore the villains of story, Grendel and his mother.…

Grendel’s mother is described as “a monstrous ogress” who attacks the mead hall to avenge her son. Because Grendel’s mother is as strong as Beowulf, he has to wear full armour and use a sword in this fight. This preparation indicates that Beowulf is not confident when he has to fight with anger and vengeance. As a pagan hero, Beowulf believes in vengeance: “It is better for a man/ to avenge his friend than to refresh his sorrow” (1383-4). He sets up to kill Grendel’s mother to avenge Ashhere, Hthrogar’s counsellor.…

As Beowulf fights off monsters that are attacking the Danes, he is in the process of fighting evil. He is doing for glory. For instance, when he is about fight Grendel and he says , "may the divine lord / in His wisdom grant the glory of victory / to whichever side he sees fit" ( 685-688 ). Certainly, Beowulf knows that God would choose him due to the fact that he is fighting for good in the name of God. Another key point is when the Danes claim that God brought Beowulf to the Danes in order to help them.…

The Christians wanted to change the perspective and values that was shared amongst the Vikings. The hero, Beowulf, was most likely altered from the original caesura due to the prevailing opinion that all people should worship Christianity. The suspected Christian monk included principals that shaped the Vikings lifestyle during the time. They truly lived by their rules of conduct and that is evident through the dialogue and actions the characters were involved in. Beowulf proves his heroism by committing actions that are valued in his culture of the Vikings and is accompanied by beliefs that the Christians weaved into his heroic…

“I’ve learned a lot about good and evil and they are not always what they appear to be” (Doren 1).Often in life, the line between good and evil can be easily blurred and the difference between man and monster can be uncertain. Anonymously written, the epic poem of Beowulf expresses many examples of drawing parallels between man and beast, more specifically between heroes and villains. Although it is not unanimously agreed upon by scholars, Beowulf is believed to have been written in eighth century A.D in Britain (Acocella 1). Beowulf was thought to be read as a ballad or as entertainment for guests. Because it is an epic poem, Beowulf is full of heroes, villains, battles, and mystical beings.…
