Create Operationalization’s
Operationalization is a critical step following the development of a hypothesis for the study. It is since operationalization serves to clarify and strengthen the hypothesis by making a construct measurable, quantifiable, and tangible. Given the topic, the effect of heat on aggression with the hypothesis, increase in heat increases aggression, the dependent variable being heat, independent variable being aggression, and a sample size of 500, it is critical to operationalize the dependent and independent variable to make them quantifiable and measurable since …show more content…
Thus, it can be operationalized using the following techniques in order to make it testable. One way of operationalizing aggression for this study is assessing the anger levels of the sample taken for the study. It can be done by conducting a survey on the participants’ reaction when they feel angry. Example of a question that can be formulated for the survey is what do you do when you are angry? The answer can include, physically attack others; throw nearby items; shout; insult others; and punch the wall. In this sense to an extent the independent variable aggression can be quantifiable as the number of times one attacks others; the extent to which they throw items around them; how loud they shout; how often they insult others; and how many times they punch the wall. Another example of operationalizing aggression includes assessing how loud a car owner is willing to honk at other car owners on a hot day in heavy traffic. It can be determined by having the individual answer to the following questions: how aggressive they have been the entire week?; How have they expressed this aggression? The respondent may provide various instances when they have been aggressive including the car honking incident, how many times they did it and what they felt while doing so. Overall, aggression can be operationalized by measuring the extent to which one is willing to threaten or inflict physical harm to others. Therefore, the operationalized hypothesis formulated for the study can be the number of physical fights that individuals will participate in, which will be higher following the temperature increase because of a hot
