Grand Nursing Theory Essay

It is amazing how much nursing has evolved and how far nurses have come since 1950s the beginning from general and broad concept of grand theories to today 's 21st Century of Evidence Based Practice 's theory that can be applied to situation specific patient 's needs and conditions. Although the grand theories had several flaws; however, these theories were able to keep nursing values, phenomenon, and advance nursing towards future (Silva, 1999). Nursing have made extreme progress, nurses have still not been able to complete the gap between the theory and practice. According to Silva (1999), nurses must entrust themselves to nursing theory and science with less passion about nursing knowledge and more inquisitive about it in a positive and productive way toward filling the gap. To understand the theory-practice gap, first we will have to understand the major issues and then try to find solution in order to fulfill the gap. Ferrara (2010) nurses should become more familiar with evidence-based practice through meta-analysis, systemic and statistical review of concepts. Nurses should have up to the mark educational background and role model mentors who can provide novice nurses with exceptional clinical experience in various clinical settings so these nurses can apply their experience, clinical judgment, critical thinking to develop specific situation theories (Ferrara, 2010). Hence, to fill the gap and create relationship between theory and practice Rolfe (1993) recommended that nurses to create Nursing Praxis to provide holistic care. Since, every patient is unique, nurses should be able to assess patient 's needs, identify clinical problems, use nursing theory, collaborate with other health experts, and make situation specific decisions based on the evidence to provide holistic care to the
