The Nursing Specialty for Me When I first entered into the field of nursing I was unsure of what kind of nursing I wanted to go into, mostly because I had little experience in the healthcare setting. Actually, before I wanted to go into nursing, I thought about becoming a radiology technician. But, I soon realized that it was not for me; I did not like the concept of getting a patient in and out of your work area as fast as you can without even knowing the whole background of the current situation. Now, after many clinical rotations and multiple classes focusing on different specialties, I have chosen a few that I am interested in: emergency nursing, pediatric nursing, and mental health/psychiatric nursing.

Safety is a huge concern when it comes to all pediatrics. A nurse needs to focus on creating a safe environment, preventing dosage mistakes (because of weight related calculations), and generating as secure place, such as a locked facility to prevent infant and child abductions. Another task of the daily pediatric nurse is gaining trust of your patient. Many children will be hesitant to let go of their parents or cooperate with treatment. If the nurse fails to create a bond with their patient, it may make the plan of care harder to follow or at least it will produce an unhappy …show more content…
They are more susceptible to injury because of a thoughtless action. It is very important to teach pediatrics about safety. Examples are: wearing helmets and other protective gear, fire safety, electrical equipment knowledge. Also, the nurse should teach the parents and other members of the family if the infant or child is not yet able to comprehend; the big ones here is car safety, SIDS precautions, feeding schedules, immunizations, and safety around the house. Two skills needed for pediatrics are risk management and patience. Risk management is important to prevent injury as related to the above. Patience is very important with children because most of the time they are scared and may not be willing to speak to someone they know yet. After building a rapport and getting to know the patient, then, more than likely, they will be more apt to talking to you and other staff.
