Management of Central Lines Sarah Dunbar, Lourie Grijalva, Brittany Matthews, Megen Price, & Lauren Sapp Introduction According to the Joint Commission (2012, p. v), Central Venous Catheters (CVCs) are the most frequent cause of healthcare-associated bloodstream infections, and about 3 million are placed in the United States annually. A central line associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) is an infection in the blood that develops as a result of introducing bacteria into these central lines. “In the United States, from 250,000 to 500,000 CLABSIs are estimated to occur every year, which result in a rate from 10% to 30% of mortality” (Perin, Erdmann, Higashi, & Sasso, 2016). Currently, one third of all hospital acquired…

Interprofessional Infection Prevention Team was formed to review NICU CLABSI data in an effort to eliminate CLABSI. This team includes nurse leaders, clinical nurses, providers, hospital infection prevention nurse, and a pharmacist. The team reviewed the policy and procedures regarding central line management and provided education focused on best practices to reduce CLABSI. Despite reeducation and reinforcing central line management, evidence based procedure standards for insertion, fluid change, proper technique for obtaining blood cultures, and regularly scheduled dressing changes, CLABSIs still occurred.…
Quality improvement programs are put into place to ensure all employees are held accountable for their actions, integrating evidence-based practice into healthcare, and to continually improve care to countless populations (Huber, 2014). Central line associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI's) are one of the most deadly healthcare associated infections (HAI's). Approximately 12-25% of CLABSI's result in death and the average cost per case is about $26,000. In recent years, between 2001 and 2009, CLABSI incidences have decreased from 43,000 to 18,000. This has saved the health care industry 3-6,000 lives and approximately $414 million in ICU's in 2009 alone. To this day, many hospitals are now reporting zero CLABSI's.…
Nurses are on the frontlines of healthcare delivery and they carry a responsibility for providing care to clients in the most ethical way possible. It is vital for all nurses to possess ethical knowledge so they may conduct their actions appropriately, diffuse tense situations, and give safe and efficient care in today 's changing world. In practical care, the question to answer is: “What can I do?” The answer lies in the context of ethical principles. Ethical care seeks the best way to provide care by using the best nursing function.…

Nurse to Nurse Incivility and How it Affects Performance Clinical Question Problem description The nursing profession has high rates of cases of incivility among the profession. Uncivil behavior at the workplace entails violence at the workplace, intimidation, withholding of critical information, public humiliation and intimidation and stealing credit for work not done (Casale, 2017). A Duty to Care: The Role of a Nurse in Circumstances of Patient Nonadherence Health care professionals are all too often aware of the lifestyle choices that have led the patient to seek treatment in their care. However, the implications of these lifestyle choices and issues that can arise from nonadherence are often downplayed or simply disregarded by the patients despite the urgency of the matter being expressed by the health care professionals. In other words, sometimes, the patients refuse to alter their lifestyle for the preservation of their own health. This can be frustrating, to say the very least, but it does not, under any circumstances, dismiss the health care professionals from their duty of care (Laken, 1983).…
After a traumatic event, the need for psychosocial support is indispensible. In the article written by Lena Junehag, Kenneth Asplund, and Marianne Svedlund, the need for psychosocial support after an acute myocardial infarction is supported. A support system for the AMI recovery patients is documented throughout the article with different variations of support. A problem within the healthcare system was found, which brings the need for improvement within the follow up care for recovering AMI patients.…
Nursing goes beyond caring for a patient during their illness and managing their disease process. Nursing includes adapting to a patient’s and their family’s physical, social, spiritual, environmental and psychological needs. I believe in treating the whole patient and being supportive of the family’s needs as well. Shelly & Miller (2006) asserts “while critical thinking, decision making, and leadership skills are extremely important, the characteristics nurses need most are compassion, competence, faith, integrity and responsibility” (p. 291).…
