Examples Of Norm Violations

For my norm violation, I went to Donna’s, a restaurant by the airport, on Sunday, October 11th at around 5pm. I was accompanied by my friend. When finished eating, the waitress took our plates and brought the checks. Instead of the usual of paying, tipping, and then leaving soon afterwards, we decided to stay for a while to see what would happen.
The Norm Violation
The norm I violated was leaving right after you pay for your food at a restaurant. This is important because restaurants need to provide tables for business, and when you don’t leave, they can’t give the table to the next paying customer, causing the restaurant to lose money.
Everyone that I know follows this norm. Some people stay a little longer at restaurants than I do, but

People in other countries take longer to eat meals than we do, and they tend to have more courses and smaller portion-sizes. Meals in other countries are also seen as an important social aspect of their daily life. People in other countries would probably not consider staying after paying to be a norm violation.

I didn’t get as many responses as I was expecting. After a few minutes, the waitress came back to ask if we needed anything else, and after we said no, she helped other tables. Apart from a strange glance at us every once in a while, nothing happened. I don’t think any of the other customers noticed anything strange either, because they weren’t focusing on us. I hadn’t told my friend that I was doing a norm violation, but he didn’t seem to think anything was strange, even after we were still at the restaurant 30 minutes after we’d finished eating.
We might have gotten different reactions if we had gone at a different time. There were very few customers in the restaurant, so I don’t think the staff was worried about getting us out of there quickly. If it had been busier, they might have actually kicked us out or at least made more of an effort to get us to leave.

I performed this folkway violation on on 10/12/16, in the media center after school. Tommy nguyen was the one who observed the social experiment on wednesday when I went up to the group of teenagers in the media center. They completely ignored/ accepted it as normal and didn't even notice that I came up to them and started talking with them. I was so surprised at that because usually people are weirded out and or give you a nasty grin or mean look. This really shocked me that some people don’t care if they get interrupted.…

I learned that breaking social norms is frowned upon by society very much. Societal norms are so set when an individual steps outside of those norms he/she is looked at as an outsider who should know better and follow the rules. Some social norms can be broken depending on sanction. For example, church is a formal sanction, there may be members that begin to shout or break out into dance in response to the feeling that overwhelms them from the music or the message that the minister may be preaching as opposed to when a person in a classroom setting he/she cannot just get up and start dancing or yelling across the classroom because the setting is different and the person will be looked as someone who is going against what it's supposed to be…

He only gave us half an hour to get ready to leave and told us we were not aloud to bring jewelry or any personal items.…

I remember completing my shit as usual, and as I punched out my card I noticed that one employee seemed to be running late and the only cashier on shift at the time seemed to be struggling to deal with the customers. The customer seemed to be arguing with my coworker and angry when he received the bill for gas in which he had used up in his boat rental. My coworker seemed to be trying to calmly tell the customer that he had used that much gas and that he needed to pay for it or she couldn't give him back his license. So before leaving through the back door, I made sure to come out and explain to the customer that that was indeed the policy of the marina and even went out the docs and had a dock hand, one who had actually filled up is rental…
